Absolute Monocytes

Absolute monocyte count measures the number of monocytes circulating in your blood. Monocytes are a type of white blood cell that help the body clear infections, remove damaged cells, and repair tissue after immune responses.

Absolute monocyte count helps physicians evaluate whether your body is mounting an immune response, recovering from an injury, or experiencing persistent low-grade inflammation. Absolute monocyte count is typically measured as part of a complete blood count (CBC).

What are Absolute Monocytes?  

Monocytes are large white blood cells that play a key role in immune defense and tissue repair. After circulating in the bloodstream, they migrate into tissues and transform into macrophages, specialized cells that engulf pathogens and clear damaged cells.

Absolute monocyte count measures the exact number of these cells in the bloodstream. A normal range of absolute monocytes is typically between 250-950 cells per microliter of blood.

Because monocytes are involved in both inflammation and repair, their levels often reflect the balance between active immune response and recovery.

How to Interpret Absolute Monocytes

Low Absolute Monocytes Levels

A low absolute monocyte count may occur when immune cell production is suppressed or when the body is recovering from severe infection. Symptoms are caused by the underlying infection.
