Basophil Percentage

Basophil percentage measures how much of your total white blood cell count is made up of basophils. Basophils are the rarest type of white blood cell, with a normal range of less than 1% of your total white blood cell count. Despite this lower ratio to other white blood cells, they play an important role in allergic reactions, immune signaling, and inflammation.

Changes in basophil percentage can show up during allergic reactions, chronic inflammation, thyroid disorders, and, less commonly, infections or certain blood disorders.

The percentage of basophils in your blood is usually measured as part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential. Doctors usually look at basophil percentage alongside the absolute basophil count (ABC) and other white blood cell markers to understand what may be affecting your immune balance.

What is Basophil %?  

Basophils are white blood cells made in the bone marrow that help regulate inflammation and immune responses. Basophil percentage is different from the absolute basophil count. 

  • Absolute basophil count tells you how many basophils are actually circulating in the blood
