Eosinophil Count

Absolute eosinophil count measures the number of eosinophils circulating in your blood. Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell involved in allergic reactions, immune responses to parasites, and inflammation.

Eosinophil levels can appear elevated on a blood test when the immune system is reacting to allergens, infections, or certain inflammatory conditions. Physicians typically evaluate this marker as part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential.

What are Absolute Eosinophils?  

Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell produced in the bone marrow and found in tissues throughout the body, including in the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. 

They play an important role in defending the body against parasites and helping regulate allergic and inflammatory responses. When eosinophils detect certain triggers, such as allergens or parasites, they release inflammatory mediators and enzymes that help regulate immune responses and neutralize perceived threats.

Absolute eosinophil count measures the total number of these cells in the blood, giving clinicians insight into how strongly the immune system is reacting.

In healthy people, the absolute eosinophil count stays relatively low. When the immune system is activated, eosinophil levels rise. A single elevated reading isn’t necessarily a cause for concern and often just means your body is fighting something off. The problem is when eosinophil levels stay high over time, which can point to more serious conditions.

Low Absolute Eosinophils Levels

Low eosinophil levels are commonly seen during acute stress states, infection, or alongside elevated cortisol levels.
