What are Monocytes (%)?
Monocytes are large white blood cells produced in the bone marrow. After circulating briefly in the bloodstream, they move into tissues where they transform into macrophages, immune cells that engulf pathogens and clear cellular debris so the body can respond more effectively to infection.
Monocyte percentage reflects the share of monocytes relative to other white blood cells. Physicians evaluate the percentage of monocytes alongside the absolute monocyte count (AMC) to get a better picture of your immune health.
- If monocyte percentage is high but the absolute count is normal, it may mean other white blood cell types have decreased.
- If both percentage and absolute count are elevated, it may indicate the immune system is producing more monocytes in response to infection or inflammation.

Low monocyte percentage usually reflects a condition affecting the immune system. Symptoms are caused by the underlying infection or condition.
