What are Absolute Neutrophils?
Neutrophils are white blood cells that rapidly respond to infection, injury, or inflammation. When bacteria, fungi, or damaged tissue are detected, neutrophils are the first immune cells to arrive, engulfing pathogens and releasing enzymes to contain the threat before it spreads. They support the innate immune system, the part of immunity you’re born with.
An absolute neutrophil count reflects the total number of neutrophils circulating in your blood. It’s possible to have a normal neutrophil percentage but still have too few neutrophils overall if your total white blood cell count is low. Since infection risk is determined by how many neutrophils are present, ANC is an important indicator of your body’s ability to fight off infection or inflammation.
