As a fitness and nutrition editor, I like to think I’m more on top of my diet than most. But as much as I hate to admit it, I too have the weekly spinach bag (you know the one) that remains untouched until it finds it’s way to the trash can.
That’s where a dietary supplement, like a greens powder, can come in clutch. While a greens powder isn’t a replacement for real, whole foods, it’s certainly a convenient way to help fill in the gaps. However, the majority of greens powders are expensive, and—let’s be honest—taste like grass (at best).
Huel Daily Greens powder is loaded with double the “superfoods,” nutrients, and plant-based ingredients compared to most greens powders on the market, at a similar price point. Here are my thoughts after a month of daily scoops.
Hone Health is a team of health-obsessed journalists, editors, fitness junkies, medical reviewers, and product testers. To ensure we deliver you research-backed information on Huel Daily Greens, we’ve reviewed several research studies and well-respected medical pages that explore the legitimacy of its ingredients. Plus, I’ve tried a handful of greens powders to give a fair comparison of the taste and value of Huel Daily Greens.
Huel Daily Greens is a greens powder designed to “supercharge your health.” One scoop contains 91 ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and whole-food-sourced nutrients like spinach, kale, fruits and berries, ashwagandha, and spirulina. The powder is made with mostly organic ingredients and is lightly sweetened with organic stevia leaf extract.
The company claims a single daily scoop of its green powder comes with 150 health benefits, including better sleep and digestion.
While Huel Daily Greens contains many healthy ingredients, the company doesn’t provide details on the specific amounts of each ingredient. Here’s what we do know about the ingredients within:
A scoop of Huel Daily greens packs 8464 mg (8.4 g) of its plant-based protein and superfood blend. For protein, Huel contains a mixture of all-organic pea protein and faba bean protein—which adds 3 grams of protein to each serving. This blend also contains what the brand calls “superfoods,” including fiber-packed oats, chia seeds, sprouted quinoa seeds, and pea fiber.
Ingredients:
Tapioca Starch, Organic Gluten-Free Oats, Pea Fiber, Organic Pea Protein, Flaxseed, Organic Faba Bean Protein, Organic Chia Seeds, Organic Sprouted Quinoa Seed
Antioxidants are substances often found in fruits and vegetables that may prevent or delay certain types of cell damage (1). Huel Daily Greens has 2551 mg (2.5 g) of antioxidants from all the greens you’d expect, like chlorella, spirulina, kale, and spinach. It also contains some unique ingredients like organic nettle root and black garlic—antioxidants known for their potential anti-inflammatory effects (2, 3).
Ingredients:
Organic Chlorella, Organic Spirulina, Organic Broccoli, Organic Broccoli Sprouts, Organic Carrot, Organic Spinach, Organic Kale, Organic Nettle Root, Organic Green Tea Leaf Extract, Organic Sweet Fennel Fruit, Organic Artichoke Leaf, Organic Basil Leaf, Organic Black Garlic, Organic Green Coffee Bean Extract, Organic Mate Leaf Extract, Organic Calciferous Marine Algae
Each serving of Huel Daily Greens delivers 520 mg of a wide variety of fruits. It includes berries—like tart cherry and cranberry—which are known for their high antioxidant and vitamin C content, and immune-boosting benefits (4, 5).
Ingredients:
Organic Tomato, Organic Coconut Nectar, Organic Apple, Organic Lemon Peel, Organic Acerola Fruit Extract, Organic Red Grape Vine Leaf, Organic Small Plantain Leaf, Organic Bilberry, Organic Strawberry, Organic Raspberry, Organic Blueberry, Organic Tart Cherry, Organic Elderberry, Organic Cranberry
You’ll also find 170 mg of adaptogens and “super mushrooms.” Adaptogens like Siberian ginseng, ashwagandha, and Rhodiola, are thought to improve anxiety, stress, and fatigue (6). Functional mushrooms like reishi and cordyceps may help slow down the aging process (7).
Ingredients:
Organic Ashwagandha Root, Organic Rhodiola Root Extract, Organic Siberian Ginseng Root, Organic Lemon Balm Leaf, Organic Marshmallow Root, Organic Maca Tuber, Organic White Ginseng Root, Organic Red Ginseng Root, Organic Ginger Root, Organic Maitake Mushroom, Organic Shiitake Mushroom, Organic Reishi Mushroom, Organic Cordyceps Militaris Mushroom
Huel Daily Greens also include 122 mg of a mix of roots, herbs, barks, and extracts—each with unique health benefits. For example, cinnamon bark may support heart health (8), and echinacea may boost immune function (9).
Ingredients:
Organic Cinnamon Bark, Organic Burdock Root, Organic Dandelion Root, Organic Echinacea Aerial Part, Organic Hawthorn Flowering Top, Organic Hibiscus Flower Extract, Organic Lemongrass Leaf
The greens powder contains 3mg of probiotics—specifically, Bacillus Coagulans MTC 5856 and Bifidobacterium Bifidum 100B. These strains are well-known and may improve gut health (10, 11). However, they appear to be heavily underdosed.
Probiotic | Huel Daily Greens Dose | Standard Dose |
Bacillus Coagulans MTC 5856 | 125 million CFUs/serving | 1-10 billion CFUs/serving (12) |
Bifidobacterium Bifidum 100B | 25 million CFUs/serving | 1-10 billion CFUs/serving (12) |
Lastly, other ingredients such as natural flavors, sunflower lecithin, guar gum, and organic stevia leaf extract are included for taste, texture, and stability of the product. These ingredients are common in many health supplements and are generally well-tolerated.
Other ingredients:
Natural Flavors, Sunflower Lecithin, Guar Gum, Organic Stevia Leaf Extract
Plus, each serving (about 15g per scoop) of Huel Daily Greens has:
There are 91 vitamins, minerals, and whole food nutrients per scoop of Huel Daily Greens. That’s even more than the leading competitor, which is camped at 75. And more than double the 40ish nutrients you’ll find in most competitor’s blends.
The sheer volume of nutrients isn’t a sure sign that Huel Daily Greens is a better greens powder. However, it does knock out 100 percent of your daily need for a load of vitamins and minerals. That includes vitamin D and B12—two vitamins most of us struggle to get enough of (13, 14).
If I’m going to drink something every day, I have to like it. Huel Daily Greens is also not the best thing I’ve ever tasted, but it’s my favorite of the greens powders I’ve tried. It has a nice lightly sweet apple flavor, and the grassy/vitamin-y qualities are more of an occasional hint than a core tasting note. I’m happy drinking it straight up. I’ve never felt the need to drink it mixed with anything but water.
Greens powders are notoriously hard to blend. They usually need more water than they say they do, and you can expect powdery lumps throughout or residue at the bottom of your glass. Not Huel Daily Greens.
With a good 10-second shake, my Huel Daily Greens never had a single clump. Yes, it does need a shake every now and again since it tends to settle between sips. Otherwise, it’s about as low-maintenance as you could ask from a greens powder.
Huel Daily Greens has more ingredients—including probiotics, adaptogens, and functional mushrooms—than other greens powders on the market. The only other product you’ll find with a similar range of ingredients is AG1, but Huel Daily Greens is more affordable.
A month’s supply of Huel Daily Greens is $57 ($1.90 per serving). If you opt for a scheduled delivery (which is flexible from once a week to every 10 weeks), it brings the price down to $45 ($1.50/serving). For context: AG1 is $99 ($3.30/serving) without a subscription and $79 with ($2.49/serving).
Huel claims a scoop of its greens powder comes with 150 health benefits covering better brain, immune, muscle, heart, digestive, joint, and bone health as well as improved stress, sleep, and energy. Those are lofty claims.
Do vitamins, minerals, and nutrients play an essential role in the above processes? Absolutely. Will Huel Daily Greens move the needle on specific things like digestive or heart health? That’s less clear.
General probiotics like the ones included in Huel Daily Greens might improve gut health. But, according to experts, if you’re looking to clear up a specific issue, you’ll need a specific probiotic for that issue. And if you’re concerned about heart health, getting your fill of B vitamins isn’t a bad idea; but, getting enough exercise, and eating a healthy diet is square one.
In other words, Huel Daily Greens might boost health in some way or another, but it likely isn’t the health silver bullet Huel—and other brands, to be fair—makes it out to be.
Huel Daily Greens does contain 91 nutrient-dense ingredients, but the amount of each individual ingredient in the formula isn’t listed. This means we don’t know if the amount included is meaningful enough to have a real effect. And in some cases, it’s clear it’s not.
For example, Huel Daily Greens contains ashwagandha in its “organic adaptogen and super mushroom complex.” A daily dose of 225 to 500 mg of ashwagandha is typically recommended for stress relief (15). But the entire 14-ingredient blend is only 170mg.
With Huel, you have no idea how far away from the recommended dose of individual ingredients you actually are. This means even if you wanted to supplement with more, it’d be tough to dial in the exact amount you’d need.
In comparison to many other greens powder companies on the market, Huel is sending some solid signals that they care about quality. Most of its ingredients are organic, and I appreciate that I can drink a daily serving without worrying whether the produce used to make it was treated with harsh chemicals.
That said, I generally look for supplements that are third-party tested. It gives that extra cushion of assurance that a supplement actually contains what it says it contains. More importantly, it shows that it isn’t contaminated with heavy metals or chemicals that might be picked up during processing.
AG1
AG1 is significantly more expensive ($99) than Huel Daily Greens but contains more probiotics and is third-party tested and NSF certified. Yet, like Huel, AG1 doesn’t give specifics on nutrient load and some testers note that it doesn’t blend or taste as good.
Live It Up Greens (Enso Superfoods)
Live It Up is slightly cheaper ($40) than Huel Daily Greens, but contains fewer ingredients. It does, however, contain more probiotics if improved gut health is a primary goal.
Garden of Life Greens
Garden of Life greens powder is significantly cheaper than Huel Daily Greens ($32), but shares the same issue of unclear ingredient load and tastes like grass.
Naked Greens
Naked Greens is less expensive ($32) than Huel Daily Greens but also has significantly fewer ingredients.
Bloom Greens
Bloom Greens is a little cheaper ($40) than Huel Daily Greens. It also comes in a ton of flavor options like mango, coconut, and strawberry kiwi. But it may cause bloating and is hyper-sweet.
Primal Greens
Primal Greens ($50) is pretty close in price to Huel Daily Greens. It tastes good but doesn’t mix as well or contain as many ingredients.
Amazing Grass Supergreens
Amazing Grass ($40) is cheaper than Huel Daily Greens. Both brands focus on high-quality ingredients. But Amazing Grass doesn’t blend or taste great; and, like Huel, doesn’t give specifics on nutrient load.
