Low Testosterone Almost Cost Me My Family

“TRT relieved my symptoms and saved my relationship.”

George Brewster before and after TRT

At 31, I was burning out—at work and at home. I’d lie awake for hours at night, ruminating on my day. When I finally got some sleep, it wasn’t restorative. The next day, I’d drag myself through work, fueled by caffeine and sheer willpower.

Activities that I used to love—fishing, hunting, and ice skating with my kids—no longer brought me joy. I felt numb. And tired. Who wants to reel in a trout when you can hardly get off the couch? Not me.

My father suggested I could have a hormone issue. He’d been diagnosed with low testosterone later in life after dealing with similar symptoms. But when I asked my doctor for a test, they dismissed me, saying I was “too young for that.” Instead, they prescribed an antidepressant and sent me on my way.

Over the next few years, my mental and physical health continued to spiral. My fiance finally confronted me one day, pointing out how my self-isolation and crankiness—and my low libido—were fracturing our relationship. When she suggested we break up, I was crushed. I loved her and our kids. Losing them wasn’t an option.

I started therapy to address my irritability and depression. It helped some, but my low energy and insomnia lingered. My therapist encouraged me to get a second opinion on my hormone health.

That’s when I discovered Hone. I liked that I could complete my at-home hormone assessment without having to go to a doctor’s office. I ordered a test, collected a small blood sample, and got my results a few weeks later. My total testosterone was shockingly low—130 ng/dL. I finally had answers. I had low testosterone at 35 years old.

Editor’s Note: Normal testosterone levels fall between 300 and 1,200 ng/dL, depending on symptoms, age, and other health factors.

I stopped the antidepressants and started once-weekly testosterone injections to bring my levels into a healthy range. Within three months, I had more energy, felt more optimistic, and snapped less at my coworkers and family.  However, I still struggled with my sleep and energy.

My three-month follow-up revealed that my total testosterone levels were still on the low end of normal. Because I still had some symptoms of low testosterone, my Hone doctor increased my dose.

By the six-month mark, I felt like a teenager again—full of energy. Even after a long shift, I’d rush home to play with my kids. I was more patient and engaged with them.

My fiance couldn’t believe my transformation, either. After we put the kids to bed, I had the energy to spend time with her—talking for hours or watching our favorite show—until bedtime. Our sex life and emotional connection came back stronger than ever. It felt like we’d found each other all over again.
