Testosterone Therapy Brought Me Back From Burnout

TRT boosted my energy and saved my new business.

Matthew Bergdorf before and after

I’ve always been hyper-focused on my health. In my 20s, I earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology and became a certified strength and conditioning coach shortly after. I never missed a day at the gym. I figured I’d be one of those guys who remained fit well into old age.

But when I turned 30, something felt “off.” My once sharp memory was clouded by brain fog. In the past, I could rattle off sports statistics from years ago. Now, I struggled to recall words and fitness concepts I used daily. My energy also tanked; I needed 1,200 milligrams of caffeine just to get through my day. I struggled to complete my own workouts and couldn’t focus when I was working with clients

At 33, I asked my primary care doctor if my hormones could be the problem. I’d worked with clients with low T, but they were in their 50s and 60s. Still, I wondered, Could low T be my issue, too?

My doctor didn’t think so. In fact, he refused to test my hormones, telling me I was “too young” to have low testosterone and blaming my fatigue on being a new dad.

I wasn’t convinced and felt angry the doctor didn’t take my concerns seriously. I threw all of my fitness industry expertise at my problem. I went to bed early, quit caffeine, upped my protein intake, and began lifting heavy weights. But the harder I tried, the worse I felt. I found myself even more tired, losing muscle and gaining fat.

I experimented like this for two years, all while starting a new career in real estate and welcoming another child with my wife. But nothing improved my energy levels. I struggled to balance personal training, real estate, and parenthood. I thought about getting a second opinion but was just too exhausted.

Then, during an open house, I hit a low point. I struggled to stay awake, even though it was only 2 pm. I glanced at the mud room and thought, “What if I just go in there, shut the door, and take a quick nap?” I couldn’t believe I was even considering it.

Instead, I leaned against the kitchen counter and scrolled through Instagram. An ad for Hone popped up on my feed. Are you struggling with low energy? Muscle loss? Fatigue? Check, check, and check. I immediately ordered an at-home hormone assessment.

A few weeks later, I got my results. My total testosterone was just 350 ng/dL. I was shocked by how low my levels were.

Editor’s Note: Normal testosterone falls between 300 and 1,200 ng/dL, depending on symptoms, age, and other health factors. However, some men may experience low testosterone symptoms within this range and qualify for treatment.

My Hone doctor prescribed twice weekly testosterone injections. A month into treatment, my energy skyrocketed. After five years of symptoms, I was finally getting relief.

Six months into treatment, I’m a different person. I sleep through the night, wake up early to hit the workout, show houses all day, and train clients at the gym. I still have the energy to play with my kids and hang out with my wife when I get home.

One thing I didn’t expect from TRT? A boost in motivation—in all areas of my life. In my first year as a real estate agent, I only sold four houses because I was too tired to network with clients. Since starting TRT, I’ve closed 11 deals in just six months. I’m on track to score my biggest deal yet, while maintaining my personal training business on the side.

TRT didn’t just restore my energy; it gave me my confidence back. I quickly regained the muscle I lost and am happy with my body again. My colleagues tell me I’m on fire right now, and I agree, I feel amazing.
