How Do Finasteride and Minoxidil Work?
Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can cause prostate growth and hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride can decrease prostate size and slow hair loss.
Minoxidil is a vasodilator, meaning it helps widen blood vessels. When applied topically to the scalp, it increases blood flow to hair follicles, providing them with more oxygen and nutrients, which can promote hair growth.
What to Expect
People generally start to see results in 3-6 months, and very often stop since they don’t see results earlier. There is usually a shedding phase of 1-3 months where your hair falls out as a new hair regrowth cycle is complete.
