What is Natural Desiccated Thyroid Prescribed For?

Natural Desiccated Thyroid is a naturally-derived combination of the triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) thyroid hormones made by your thyroid gland. It is not recommended as the primary treatment for hypothyroidism. It is a natural glandular supplement product made from animal thyroid glands (usually a pig’s).

Contraindications

Avoid use of Natural Desiccated Thyroid in individuals with hypersensitivity to any component, untreated thyrotoxicosis, or uncorrected adrenal insufficiency.

Possible Side Effects

Adverse reactions often indicate excess thyroid replacement, including abdominal cramps, ataxia, cardiac arrhythmia, weight loss, etc.

Medication Interactions: Use with caution in adrenal insufficiency, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and myxedema.

Warnings

Thyroid hormone should not be used to treat obesity in patients with normal thyroid function. Liothyronine is ineffective for weight reduction in normal thyroid patients and may cause serious or life-threatening toxicity, especially when taken with amphetamines. Talk to your doctor about the potential risks associated with this medication.
