What is Levothyroxine Prescribed For?
Levothyroxine (generic Synthroid®) is a synthetic thyroid hormone medication primarily used to treat hypothyroidism, enlarged thyroid glands, and thyroid cancer.
How Does Levothyroxine Work?
Levothyroxine is a synthetic version of a hormone called thyroxine (sometimes called T4). It replaces thyroxine if your thyroid gland cannot produce it and prevents the symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue, weight gain, muscle and joint pain, and depression.

Levothyroxine starts working right away, but it may be several weeks before your symptoms start to improve.

Contraindications
Avoid use of Levothyroxine in individuals with uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, hypersensitivity to glycerol and edetate disodium, or contraindications for oral therapy in chronic hypothyroidism.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects include arrhythmias, dyspnea, muscle spasms, headache, nervousness, insomnia, tremors, weight loss, diarrhea, and skin rash.
Warnings
Thyroid hormone should not be used to treat obesity in patients with normal thyroid function. Liothyronine is ineffective for weight reduction in normal thyroid patients and may cause serious or life-threatening toxicity, especially when taken with amphetamines. Talk to your doctor about the potential risks associated with this medication.
