What is T3 Prescribed For?
Liothyronine functions as a synthetic T3, the active form of T4, the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It addresses decreased T4 production in hypothyroidism. Commonly known as Liothyronine or Cytomel, T3 treats severe hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid that fails to produce sufficient thyroid hormone.

Contraindications
Liothyronine (synthetic T3) might not be right for you if you have certain medical conditions or take certain medications, including: Hypersensitivity to liothyronine sodium, uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, untreated thyrotoxicosis, concurrent use with artificial rewarming of the patient.

Reported side effects include cardiovascular issues (arrhythmia, tachycardia), nervous system complications (headache, tremors), and dermatological reactions (skin issues, transient hair loss), among others.
Warnings
Thyroid hormone should not be used to treat obesity in patients with normal thyroid function. Liothyronine is ineffective for weight reduction in normal thyroid patients and may cause serious or life-threatening toxicity, especially when taken with amphetamines.
