What is Progesterone Cream Prescribed For?
Bioidentical progesterone cream is used to supplement the body’s natural progesterone production, a hormone that can fluctuate during perimenopause before significantly decreasing during menopause. Progesterone cream is commonly prescribed to women in perimenopause to help regulate the menstrual cycle and alleviate premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms. Additionally, during both perimenopause and menopause, it may help to improve brain function, reduce hot flashes, stabilize mood, improve sleep quality, and support healthy skin and bones.
How Does Progesterone Cream Work?
Applied to the skin, micronized progesterone cream delivers bioidentical progesterone, which closely resembles the hormone naturally produced by the ovaries.
The application frequency differs based on menopausal status. Women experiencing perimenopause typically use the cream either daily or specifically during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle. In contrast, women who have gone through menopause generally apply the cream on a daily basis.
Note: Progesterone Cream is suitable for use by women who have had their uterus surgically removed and/or those using progesterone-only products.
What to Expect
Women in perimenopause who are taking progesterone cream should expect a more consistent menstrual cycle, along with an improvement in symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings and improvement in sleep quality. While women should always follow the directions of their provider, topical progesterone cream is typically applied to the inner thigh, inner forearms, abdomen, or back of the knees. Side effects for progesterone cream might be slightly different or milder from oral progesterone due to the difference in absorption and dosage.
